IMPORTANT NOTES – Read First
Having been in the scale model decal business for a very long time, I have extremely strict standards for including ÒconfirmedÓ information. A ton of bad aircraft details have been published (HillÕs Black Sunday book is one of the worst offenders), and this web page is a first start at getting every single TIDAL WAVE correctly identified. I know a lot, but I certainly donÕt know everything, so if you can confirm specific pieces of UNCONFIRMED data below, please email me at this address. Please donÕt tell me something is written in some book, unless itÕs a crewmanÕs diary or history written by a crewman. IÕve got all the Ploesti books, including some pretty obscure ones, but you never know if a crewman has privately published something you havenÕt heard about.
A good example of this is Lloyd ÒPeteÓ Hughes Medal Of Honor B-24D. We confirm the serial from the Sortie Report. We know from a letter a crewman sent home prior to the mission that they named the ship ÒOle KickapooÓ (not to be confused with the ÒKickapooÓ that crashed on takeoff). While the letter home specifically states the crew had not painted artwork on the plane, blow-ups of the series of official photos taken of this ship on fire and crashing clearly show a large white image of something (we canÕt tell what, but it may be a stylized ÒKickapooÓ) painted on the left side nose. ThereÕs no doubt something was painted there; we just donÕt know what for sure. ItÕs definitely not a huge hole in the bombardier-navigator compartment, and it appears on all the photos where that part of the nose can be seen.
Verifying full ACSNs (aircraft serial numbers) is relatively easy in the official records, except for the 376th, which used Field Numbers and individual aircraft letters. However, as mentioned I hold a high standard when it comes to aircraft nicknames, because over the decades I've seen so many aircraft misidentified. The list below will not show an aircraft name as CONFIRMED unless it is shown in a very clear photo that shows both the name and serial number. It is not enough for a photo to show the name and Field Number (as in the 376th) or name and letter only, because in far too many cases, historically, these matchups have been wrong. Personal accounts written AT THE TIME are acceptable confirming references, but too often accounts written long after the war have innocent errors of fact and are generally less useful as confirmation.
Let me give you a personally painful example of this. When we did the research and artwork for my PYN-up Decals Ploesti Heroes decal set, Brian FlavelleÕs ÒWongo WongoÓ was a lock. Good photos and confirmed participation in TIDAL WAVE. The second ship choice was more or less open; I had a bunch of favorites but right at that time a local modeler came to me with a bunch of excellent photos of an original (and very long lived) 389th ship, ÒFightinÕ Sam.Ó He told me, in good faith, his late father had was a crew chief on one of the TIDAL WAVE ships and that a friend of his dadÕs was crew chief on one of the other TW ships-FightinÕ Sam. HeÕd interviewed the old gentleman and copied his photos, so we were set to go. This occurred long before I started my detailed TIDAL WAVE research, and although I was an expert on 44th aircraft, not so much the other groups. Anyway, we added FightinÕ Sam marking to our Ploesti decal set in good faith. Unfortunately, I now know Sam did not in fact go to Ploesti (although his artwork is fantastic). Oops. IÕm not going to make a mistake like that again. Everybody involved used good faith, but at the end of the day FightinÕ Sam was not a Ploesti veteran.
Verifying aircraft letter is relatively easy in the official records for all groups. However, there are multiple instances where the letter itself is confirmed, but the additional mark (underscore ("_"), following minus ("-") sign, bar over the top of the letter, etc.) is sometimes reported and sometimes not. Multiple 389th documents report only the aircraft letter for a specific ship, but photos clearly show a following minus sign ("-"). Therefore, I prefer photographic evidence showing both the ACSN and letter when possible.
Frankly, while this information is not central to my TIDAL WAVE documentary, as a modeler I personally want to know this stuff as well as provide a research tool for future modelers and historians. This is Version 1 so I may have typos that will get corrected in future versions. As noted, if you can add CONFIRMED information to this table please email me here.
